A Message From Msgr. Duane:
When Jesus washed the Apostles’ feet, he gave us an example of service to live by.  Serving others is a wonderful opportunity to show Christ’s love through our own sacrifice of time and talent.  The parish of Sacred Hearts has many wonderful opportunities to serve each other and our surrounding community.  Summaries of each can be found below.  Please prayerfully consider joining one or more of these service teams or the “in a pinch” list  (details at the bottom of the page).


Year-Round Service Opportunities (click on any of these for more information; joining does not mean committing to the entire year)


Service Night at Luke House

Date/Time/Number of Hours: 1st Tuesday of each month/2-3 hours including driving time How Many People Total: 12 onsite, 30+ to prepare/donate food
Prior Knowledge Needed: None, you can just show up. If donating food, make sure to check the specifics of the item you are donating (there is a specific casserole recipe, for example)
Description: This is a great opportunity to donate, create, or serve food for the needy. If serving, make sure you get to 310 South Ingersoll Street by 5:15 PM on Tuesday. There may be a line outside, but as a helper you can come right inside. Clean-up should be done by 7:30 PM. If supplying food, make sure it is to the Parish Center by noon on the first Tuesday of the month. Sacred Hearts supplies the exact same types of food for their night of service each month and Luke House staff is on hand to help us.

Food Pantry

Date/Time/Number of Hours: There are many opportunities to volunteer at the Sun Prairie Emergency Food Pantry. These include assisting clients during Food Pantry hours of operation, stocking shelves and picking up donated food at various locations. Volunteers assist clients every other Monday from 10:00 AM- 2:00 PM, 10:00 AM-12:00 Noon or 12:00 Noon- 2:00 PM. Stocking is done on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. There is also a Mobile Food Pantry 11 times a year on the last Tuesday of the month, except November (with a different schedule due to Thanksgiving), from 4:00 PM until 6:30 PM. 
Prior Knowledge Needed: None, just sign up!
Description: The Sun Prairie Emergency Food Pantry served an average of 547 Sun Prairie families per month in 2014. A volunteer who is assisting clients helps a person shop for items using a point system. The Sun Prairie Emergency Food Pantry is at Sunshine Place, 10 Rickel Road, Sun Prairie. The Mobile Food pantry serves an additional 120 area families per month. The food comes from Second Harvest Food Bank. Volunteers from several area churches and businesses work together to provide some extra food for families and people who struggle to make it through the month.
How do I sign up? Sign-up is via the Food Pantry Website. If you would like to work with your fellow parishioners, remember to sign up on one of our shifts as listed above.

Donate Food for the Food Pantry or Diapers for Pregnancy Helpline or the Women’s Care Center

Date/Time/Number of Hours: Ongoing
Prior Knowledge Needed: Only the willingness to provide food or diapers to people in need.
Description: A wooden collection box next to the Ladies Restroom,in the Church Narthex, is for Sun Prairie Emergency Food Pantry Donations. The first weekend of the month is especially noted for Food Pantry Donations. Under the table by the elevator on the main floor in The Project Rosebud Display is a basket to collect diapers for young mothers in need for Pregnancy Helpline or the Women’s Care Center.
How do I sign up? There is no sign-up. Just bring donated items to the Church and leave in the above specified locations.

Adult Choir

Date/Time/Number of Hours: Rehearsals Thursday evenings 7-8:30 p.m.; sing at 9 a.m. Mass about 3 times a month, plus other special occasions.
Prior Knowledge Needed: Choir members should have a pleasant singing voice and be able to follow direction. Ability to read music and/or previous choir experience is helpful, but not necessary.
Description: The choir helps lead the singing at Mass and provides special music to enhance the liturgy.

Resurrection Choir

Date/Time/Number of Hours: Practice is held about 30 minutes before the funeral liturgy begins.
Prior Knowledge Needed: Choir members should have a pleasant singing voice and be able to follow direction. Ability to read music and/or previous choir experience is helpful, but not necessary.
Description:This is a special choir for funeral Masses. Some participants are from the adult choir, but membership is generally those who can be available during the various times funeral Masses may be held.

Bell Choir

Date/Time/Number of Hours: Rehearsals Wednesday evenings 6-7 p.m.; play different Mass times, one or more times per month, plus other special occasions. One director and ten ringers are needed per Mass.
Prior Knowledge Needed: To play bells you need to read music (either-treble or bass clef or both) and keep time.
Description:The bell choir helps enhance the liturgy with beautiful music.

Grace Notes (Children's Choir)

Date/Time/Number of Hours: Rehearsals Thursday afternoons 2:00 - 3:30 from September through May. Sing at one 9:00 AM Mass (usually the 3rd Sunday) from September - May as well as the 4:00 Children's Mass on Christmas Eve.
Prior Knowledge Needed: No prior knowledge or experience is needed, but children should be in grades 3- 8.
Description: Currently the number of children in the choir is 24. The children's choir sings songs that range from Gregorian Chant to Christian pop. The children have also been learning to play the bells using a color-coded bell system.

Folk Choir

Date/Time/Number of Hours: Rehearsals are Monday evenings from 7:30 to 8:45pm from September thru May/June. We sing at either the 5pm or 11am Masses, 2-3 times per month, plus on special occasions.
Prior Knowledge Needed: All are welcome. No prior musical experience required - only a joyful heart and the desire to serve the parish in this capacity.
Description: The Folk Choir is a family-friendly group which helps to lead the singing during Mass and provide special music to enhance the liturgy.

Ushers

Date/Time/Number of Hours: 4-5 ushers are needed for each Mass, so if you are already attending that Mass, this is an excellent way to serve. A captain (experienced usher) coordinates each Mass. The captain will check with ushers from the pool to see if they can do it. Each Mass has its own coordination; sign up for the Mass you usually attend.
Prior Knowledge Needed: No prior knowledge, the captain will be there to help and tell you what to do.
Description: Ushers help seat people, provide guidance on the facilities, and perform collection activities. Currently the number of ushers is about 20. Could especially use more at the 11:00 Mass.

Cantors

Date/Time/Number of Hours:About once a month, or as personal schedule allows. Occasional cantor practices are held; attendance is strongly encouraged, but not mandatory.
Prior Knowledge Needed: A cantor should have a pleasant singing voice, be willing to help lead the singing and to sing some Mass music alone, and be able to learn new music as needed. (Assistance in learning music can be provided as needed.)
Description: A cantor leads the singing at Mass.

Instrumentalists

Date/Time/Number of Hours: As needed and as available for various times instrumental music is needed throughout the year.
Prior Knowledge Needed: Ability to play an instrument well enough to play an instrumental part or accompaniment.
Description: An instrumentalist enhances the Mass with music.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

Date/Time/Number of Hours: About one weekend Mass per month.
Prior Knowledge Needed: In the Diocese of Madison, it is required that Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion attend a diocesan training workshop, in addition to any parish-specific training provided by the parish Liturgist or other qualified person. Extraordinary Ministers must be Catholics in good standing and be at least 16 years of age. It is also necessary that they have received all of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation).
Description: Ministers will help distribute Holy Communion during the Mass.

Lectors

Date/Time/Number of Hours:About one weekend Mass per month.
Prior Knowledge Needed: Good speaking voice, willingness to speak in front of others, love of God’s Word and the people of God. A brief training session is provided by the Liturgist or other qualified person.
Description:Lectors proclaim Scripture during the liturgy.

Commentators

Date/Time/Number of Hours: About one weekend Mass per month.
Prior Knowledge Needed: Good speaking voice, willingness to speak in front of others. A brief training session is provided by the liturgist or other qualified person.
Description:Commentators read the Prayer of the Faithful and announcements.

Greeters

Date/Time/Number of Hours: About 15-20 minutes before 1-2 Masses per month.
Prior Knowledge Needed: All that is needed is a hospitable heart and a willingness to come to church early.
Description:Greeters stand at an assigned church entrance before Mass, offering a pleasant greeting to those who arrive. One might offer assistance on occasion, for example by holding a door open or answering a question about church facilities for a newcomer or visitor.

Youth Servers

Date/Time/Number of Hours:About 15 minutes before and after Mass and the duration, usually once or twice a month. More Masses are optional.
Prior Knowledge Needed: Grades 5-12. Future training sessions will be announced.
Description:The Altar Server is responsible for the preparation before Mass and assisting the Presider during and after Mass.
How do I sign up? Fill out a registration form (available at the Parish Office) and submit to Naomi Matthees via email make arrangements with her at 608-837-2488.

Adult Servers

Date/Time/Number of Hours:About 15 minutes before and after Mass and the duration, usually once or twice a month. More Masses are optional.
Prior Knowledge Needed: None, but prior serving experience is a plus.
Description:Adult Servers help mainly at Funerals, Eucharistic Adoration, and other special occasions. Assist Presider before, during and after liturgies by holding books, carrying vessels, lighting and extinguishing candles, etc.

Religious Education Teachers/ Christian Formation Catechists

Date/Time/Number of Hours: Most Wednesdays during the school year. Religious Education is only taught on school days. The early session (grades k-5) is from 3:30-4:45 and the later session (grades 6-10) is from 6:45-8:15).
Prior Knowledge Needed: Must be a Catholic who attends Mass weekly and has received all of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation). Materials are provided with lesson plans. Some personal preparation is highly recommended.
Description: A religious education teacher is entrusted to pass the teachings of our faith on to the next generation. More information can be found at the Christian Formation of our website.

F.O.C.C.U.S. Couples (Pre-Marriage Ministry)

Date/Time/Number of Hours: Up to six meetings a year with engaged couples needing Marriage Preparation. The FOCCUS© Pre-Marriage Inventory is a comprehensive, user-friendly tool for use by lay individuals, couples or professionals who are helping couples prepare for marriage.
Prior Knowledge Needed: There is Diocesan training required online or at specific training sessions.
Description: Engaged couples take the online FOCCUS© Pre-Marriage Inventory. This provides a personalized FOCCUS© Couple Report that helps target each couple's discussion to topics important to marital success. An online report is downloaded by the F.O.C.C.U.S couple who then interprets the FOCCUS© Pre-Marriage Inventory Couple Report and uses the Couple Report to help engaged couples in the marriage preparation dialogue.

Care Team Ministry

Date/Time/Number of Hours: One meeting the third Monday of each month. Once matched with a parishioner, you create a schedule together. You determine how much time you have to give.
Prior Knowledge Needed: Compassion and the desire to serve. Training is provided by Catholic Charities and held at Sacred Hearts.
Description: After completing the training, you are matched with a parishioner that has contacted our parish with a particular need. Some of the assistance offered to parishioners is rest and relief for family caregivers, help with errands/ organizing, going on outings, providing companionship and help with transportation. You determine the type of assistance you want to provide. Team leaders coordinate the ministry under the direction of our Pastoral Staff.

Sunshine Supper

Date/Time/Number of Hours: The third Monday of every three months (March, June, September December). People who donate food for the Supper need to have the food to the parish Center by 3PM on serving day. Some volunteer workers also bring in food at the time of their shift. Six volunteers are needed at 4:15 PM for set-up and the rest of the volunteers start at 5:00PM and work until 7:00 PM. Children under age 14 need to be accompanied by an adult.
Prior Knowledge Needed: No prior knowledge necessary.
Description: In the spirit of hospitality and community outreach, Sunshine Supper provides a free and nutritious meal for people living in the Sun Prairie area. One goal of the program is to provide a hot meal to individuals and families who would otherwise go without. A second goal is to gather area residents around the dinner table to enjoy friendship and fellowship. Meals are served every Monday from 5:30-6:30PM at 1632 W. Main Street, Suite 200. Doors open at 5 pm. Volunteers park on Hart Street and enter in the back door of the Sunshine Supper place (the door is marked).

Funeral Support

Date/Time/Number of Hours: Varies.
Prior Knowledge Needed: No prior knowledge necessary.
Description: Funeral Masses and the support around them are needed throughout the year, and are, of course, unpredictable in timing. If you can support through food preparation, serving at funeral lunches, or any of the needed Mass services (Adult Server and Resurrection Choir) during normal funeral times (9-3), please offer to get on this list to be contacted when the need should arise.

Seasonal Service Opportunities (click on any of these for more information)



40 Days for Life at Planned Parenthood

Date/Time/Number of Hours: One or two hour shift. Shifts are every Sunday from late September to Early November (dates announced closer to September). Four individuals are needed per shift.
Prior Knowledge Needed: Only a heart that seeks an end to abortion. Knowledge of the Women’s Care Center across the street and other helpful things to say to those who may talk to you are helpful.
Description: Every fall, typically beginning in late September, our diocese organizes a contiguous 40-day Vigil at Planned Parenthood. If you’d like to contribute as a part of Sacred Hearts' two hour shift or any part of that time, it would be much appreciated. Your presence is a valuable reminder to passersby that someone cares about both them and their unborn child. There is no picketing or confrontation as this is a peaceful demonstration, but being prepared to help others who may have questions is a plus.

Saint Gerard Shower

Date/Time/Number of Hours: In September, announcements regarding the Saint Gerard Shower are placed in the bulletin. Pack and Plays are set up two weekends in October for donations. Monday after the Saint Gerard Shower, items are sorted and boxed or bagged and Pregnancy Helpline and the Woman’s Care center are contacted to pick up donations.
Prior Knowledge Needed: No prior knowledge necessary.
Description: This baby shower collects new and gently used baby clothing and blankets, as well as disposable diapers and other baby items. These items are donated to Pregnancy Helpline for their Sharing Center, Layette packages and Diaper Bank and the Women’s Care Center support services.

Mega Rummage Sale 

Date/Time/Number of Hours: Held the second week (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) of August each year. The Sale is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Set Up: Many volunteers are needed throughout the summer to ready donations for the sale. ***The Rummage Sale is held in the school gym and cafeteria and the Parish garage. The gym and cafeteria are air conditioned but not handicapped accessible. ***
How Many People Total: We need approximately 125 volunteers for the three days of the sale. However, more volunteers are needed, beginning in June, to sort, repair, wash or dispose of the donated items. Volunteers are also needed throughout the summer to begin set-up of the Rummage Sale. These volunteers work Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-11 a.m. and 6 - 8 p.m. Our Rummage Sale is a huge undertaking and many, many volunteers are needed. Currently we are in need of chair people and “department managers” for this fund raiser.
Prior Knowledge Needed: None (as long as we have chair people to oversee the event), though it would be helpful to have someone on hand with a knowledge of antiques and collectibles so that they may be priced accordingly.
Description: There are many different jobs available at the Rummage Sale. Sorting, washing, mending, hanging, folding, picking up donations such as furniture, etc.
How do I sign up? Call Lisa Gorecki at the Parish Center 608-837-7381 ext. 234 or via email. Volunteer forms will also be made available in the back of Church as the event approaches.

Annual Fall Festival

Date/Time/Number of Hours: The Festival is held the weekend after Labor Day in September each year. Festival grounds open at 11 a.m. on Saturday and close at 10 p.m. Grounds open again on Sunday at 10 a.m. and close at 6 p.m.
How Many People Total:Hundreds of people are needed in many different areas of the festival, which is the biggest fundraiser for Sacred Hearts - from Children’s Games to serving at the Sunday Dinner. Each event requires a different number of volunteers and the shift lengths vary.
Prior Knowledge Needed: None, with the exception being the Beer Tent where everyone must be at least 21 years of age.
Description: With so many tasks, the responsibilities vary.

Can’t commit to anything, but could be able to help in a pinch?  Please request to be on the “in a pinch” email list by emailing Sharon or by calling 608-837-7381, ext. 238 An email will only be sent out to this list if an event is coming and not enough support is out there.  It will not be used for any other purpose!
